The Main Squeeze

canstockphoto4667203

Ask any grape if it dreams of being made into wine, and the answer would probably be a resounding “No!”.

Being picked, squished, stirred, and  barreled – and left to sit in a dark cave for years hardly sounds like an ideal existence.

But without this process, there would be no wine.

You certainly can’t drink grapes!

The end result is worth the stress and strain.

We all can appreciate lovely wines, with beautiful colors and palate-pleasing flavors, worthy of intimate moments and special celebrations.

And I really never stopped to think about the trauma – and the waiting time – that ultimately has such a lovely outcome.

To create wine, the press is essential.

This process has some parallels in regard to our spiritual lives.

Oswald Chambers says it well:

God can never make us wine if we object to the fingers He uses to crush us with.

Being “smooshed” by our life situations or difficult relationships can be an excruciating procedure, to be sure.

But who ever said growing closer to God was all fun and games?

Perhaps the efforts to extract our juices – God’s powerful and purifying embrace – is vital to our end result: the sweet essence of our close relationship to Him…

…and the continual flow of His love, which we can imbibe at any given moment, without ever overindulging.

Is there something that God is trying to wring out of you?

The thoughts of going through His lifepress is not appealing in the least.

But by submitting to His will, impurities are extracted, and the qualities remain that allow us to be molded into His likeness.

Sometimes the fermentation process seems to take an eternity.

But oh the finish… big, bright, and opulent.

A unique meritage of all the best that we can be.

Keep right with God and let Him do what he likes, and you will find that He is producing the kind of bread and wine that will benefit His other children. ~Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

The Must of Trust

TrustEvery so often, God helps us to refocus.

Especially when we wander off the path toward Him.

Sometimes He speaks gently – and if our attentions are elsewhere, we may miss the message.

In other instances, His directive can land right smack between the eyes.

In today’s Jesus Calling, Sarah Young’s words set me straight:

The most direct path between point A and point B on your life-journey is the path of unwavering trust in God.

It would be SO much easier if, when we get diverted, God could command our attention with a text message or a headline that would appear immediately.

  • Whoa…Are you sure you should be thinking/doing that?
  • Really???  What happened to your commitment and resolve?
  • Maybe you should see that situation/person through My eyes…

We are often reminded to speak (or think) the Truth in Love.

But I often forget that God always has the most loving, honest, and perfect missives for all of us.

…If we can only be open to receive them.

I believe my quest to be wholehearted requires not just a sometimes trust – but an always trust.

What about an occasional Tweet from God:

#TrustMeAlone#alloflife

Or, technology could one day develop a pulsing LED thought stream continually visible to the eye – like Google glasses.  (I for one, would love that idea.)

trust Him…trust Him…trust Him…trust Him…trust Him…

Has your faith and hope in God been off in a corner somewhere, hidden under the cover of distraction, worry or fear?

Do whatever it takes to retrieve it.

Dust it off.

Make it a vital part of each and every day.

Imbed it in your heart.

It’s a MUST…

Teach me your ways, O Lordmake them known to me. Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you.   ~Psalm 25:4-5 (GNT)

The MMI Heartstrings Challenge

canstockphoto5271259

Do you have a favorite charity that has touched your heart? And what would YOU do to encourage others to make a donation?

According to the latest report,  the ALS Ice bucket challenge has admirably raised over $88.5 million dollars for a most worthy cause.

It is amazing how a quirky idea has prompted so many people to act – and give.

We have made our donation to ALS, sans the ice bucket.

One of the most compelling reasons for doing so was a  blog post that described what it is really like to have ALS.

I encourage you to read it: http://www.bostern.com/blog/2014/08/15/what-an-als-family-really-thinks-about-the-ice-bucket-challenge/

We all have special charities that we support, don’t we?

So I started thinking about what it would take to motivate people to donate the one that is dearest to our hearts – Medical Ministry International, also known as MMI.

Describing what life is like for those whom we serve is the best way to explain why MMI is committed to serving the poor.

In most Third World Countries, medical care is either unaffordable or simply unavailable.

As eye project volunteers, we have seen how people deal with disadvantage and hardship due to having impaired vision.

Imagine yourself in these circumstances:

  • You have not seen your children – or grandchildren – for many years because you are blind from cataracts.
  • Undiagnosed and/or untreated glaucoma continues to decrease your vision.  Glaucoma drops that slow this process are nowhere to be found – and if they are available, they are extremely expensive.
  • You are a child – or adult – with strabismus (crossed eyes).  If you are a woman, you have no chance of either getting a job or finding a husband if you have this condition. As a child, you are self-conscious of how this makes you different from your peers (not to mention how this wreaks havoc with your vision).
  • You can’t see to read, cook, or do anything requiring near vision simply because you can’t afford a pair of reading glasses.
  • To come for evaluation/treatment at an MMI eye project, you may have to walk for miles on unpaved roads, or ride a bus – or, in the Amazon region, a boat,  for hours to arrive at 3:00am just to get a place in the line. You then keep your place (with hundreds of others) until the clinic opens at 7:30, hoping to get in. Once inside, it takes hours to progress through the line to see the doctors. You forgo any food or drink because you don’t have extra money for that.

On our eye projects, we treat as many patients as humanly possible on a given day. When necessary, they receive prescription or reading glasses; if glaucoma drops or  laser treatments are needed, they are provided.

Cataract patients are able to see again after their surgery. When we are able to operate on strabismus patients, they often cry when they see their newly straightened eyes in the mirror.

MMI does a wide variety of medical projects each year, all over the world.

If reading about the plight of our patients touches your heart, please accept this challenge and donate here:  every $1 you give provides $8 worth of medical services.

I hope that a cure can be found for ALS now that their funds for research have skyrocketed.

We will never eradicate poverty in my lifetime – but my prayer is that MMI will be able to continue to minister to the poor and underserved.

Please consider helping…

I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. ~John 13:15

A Word is Worth Its Wait

canstockphoto12788721

What happens when you discover that wholehearted has become hole-hearted?

Breezing along through the year with wholehearted as my guiding word has been relatively easy – much like I hoped it would be when I chose it.

However, knowing that God has intentions well beyond our imaginings, I knew in the back of my mind that eventually I would have to climb deeper into the word’s meaning.

Descending that ladder reveals a whole different perspective.

Parts of my heart that I thought were full were stuffed with “filler”…useless material that only fluffed things up for appearances sake.

A few holes were discovered, too; they were allowing the good stuff to merely pass through without staying permanently imbedded.

How did my heart get to this state?  Aside from the mileage related to age, maybe its upkeep has been a bit neglected.

(Have I been ignoring those “Maintenance Required” warnings?)

So…what to do?

Time for a cardio tune-up, to say the least!

And where might I go for help with that?

…To God, of course…the original Repair Man.  I can request that He do some diagnostics and give me the analysis of major issues.

Perhaps a transfusion of unconditional love is necessary – or just increasing the flow rate of gladness and joy would suffice.

Maybe a few minor excisions are indicated.

Cutting out some negativity and discouragement would make a definite improvement.

Or how about a procedure that would open up the valves that are clogged with whatever is keeping me from getting closer to God?

A word can have little meaning until it truly becomes a part of your heart.

Dear Lord,

Thank you for revealing how I can become more wholehearted.  I consent to all recommended repairs, knowing full well that I will have to commit to make some changes too. I have full faith in you as my Care and Repair Provider.

These awarenesses have opened my eyes to your intentions, and I am grateful to know you always there, encouraging, guiding, loving.

You alone can make holes become whole.

And your all-knowing guidance is worth the wait.

O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion.  ~1 Kings 8:23

Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

~ Psalm 27:14

When Orange is a Gift Back

iStock_000020609674SmallThe setting was familiar enough… a typical gym with polished floors, club logos painted on the high walls.

We were greeted with smiles of appreciation and offers of assistance.

It was only the state issued jumpsuits that distinguished us from them.

Our hope for the opportunity to sing at the New Mexico penitentiary had become a reality.

With the help of the prison Chaplain and the Deputy Warden, much had transpired before we could arrive at this moment, including the speedy rescheduling of our concert. (Our original date was cancelled  at the last minute due to a lockdown.)

Understandably, everyone had his or her own variety of pre-concert butterflies, not knowing what to expect in this situation.

Even still, all remained staunchly committed.

Our apprehensions soon melted away as we began our program.

As we sang our opening hymn, goosebumps erupted as I realized that we had embarked on a bridge crossing of sorts.

When a lone inmate stood in reverence during our next song, we realized that the first step had been taken from the other side.

We were singing in the Key that He had arranged.

At the start of How Great is Our God, almost all of the 40+ men stood, some with hands raised, and sang with us.

Our tear-filled eyes could barely read the music.

We sang and praised God together for one precious hour that passed by more quickly than we wanted it to.

In the beautiful words of one of our members, We weren’t just singing FOR them, we became fellow worshippers WITH them! Nothing compares to that!

Many of this group of inmates were members of a church within the prison called Heaven Bound, a group of men who believe in the transforming power of God.

It was evident that though these men are confined to a prison environment, they still hold on to hope and strength from the Lord as they live out their days behind walls.

As our concert neared the end, we invited them to share one of their songs with us.

At the keyboard, the worship leader of Heaven Bound led the men, singing and playing I Am Redeemed with every ounce of his being.

Then You look at this prisoner and say to me, “son…
Stop fighting a fight it’s already been won”
I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed.

I will never hear this song again without remembering this moment – a vivid illustration of how we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, equal in His eyes, and loved without reservation.

We ended the evening with full hearts and promises of continued prayers for everyone there.

The Chaplain said we were welcome back any time.

I daresay that we will eagerly await that opportunity.

What we received will remain in our hearts forever.

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there I am with them. ~ Matthew 18:20
